Deer

Gnarles Barkley, Lee Lakosky's Iowa Giant Buck

I've taken many big deer over the years, but Gnarles Barkley was the biggest—at 300+ lbs. on the hoof, he was a true monster. This meek, elusive behemoth had been on my mind for three years, ever since the day I saw what looked like an elk horn laying in the snow.

Dealing with Dominant Does

The warm sunshine of a late September afternoon had faded away. Cool air settled into the hillside flat where my ground blind stood. After scanning the area around my blind, I slowly stretched to pull on a heavy shirt. "Whew, whew," echoed through the woods. I had been busted by the dominant doe of a small herd of deer which regularly used my small food plot.

Deer Hunting Strategies: Food Plots, Acorns, & Dead Deer!

In this episode the team puts together a plan for hunting whitetails using MRI (Most Recent Information). Watch this video for tips on how to know when to hunt food plots vs. acorns as well as tips for fall seeding of clover. There are more whitetail kills to share but unfortunately, they are not the result of the bow (see time marker 6:39). In SE Indiana pro-staffer Kable McAlpine discovers several deer dead as a result of EHD.

Hunt the Fall Feeding Frenzy

Ever wonder why so many big bucks are killed the first few days of the early season? It's simple if you understand that in most parts of whitetail country deer are in the "feeding phase" of the "feed-breed-feed" cycle when the season opens and deer possessed by the "need to feed" are some of the most huntable deer of the season.
