Few whitetail hunters today have enough hunting land available to track a buck for miles until they catch up with it. Most properties are too small for that.
With the rut now finished or winding down, bucks in many areas are in precarious shape.

Yes, it happens every year. A few lucky deer hunters stumble out on opening day without any preparation, find a stump to sit on or a tree to lean back against and wind up shooting a trophy whitetail. But with today's wary bucks and heavy hunting pressure, a careless approach like this rarely leads to such a fairy-tale ending.

Silently at first, then with the soft sounds of bird songs, daybreak slowly illuminated the dark West Virginia woods. Gray shapes came first, then a hint of orange on the eastern horizon.
If all you're doing about deer hunting season now is fantasizing about that big buck you hope to encounter on a crisp November morning, you're making a big mistake, and you have a lot of catch-up to do. It takes more than day-dreaming about massive racks to be ready when seasons roll around.
