The name Lew's, is known by fisherman all over the country as a company that strives to live by their mottos, which is that of building innovative fishing gear that are lighter, stronger and faster. One of Lew's NEW products for 2018 is the updated Team Lew's HyperMag SLP baitcast reel. After putting the new HyperMag to the test myself, it is clear that the task of developing lighter, stronger and faster products is still going strong. Over the past month, I have made multiple fishing trips to Norfork Lake, putting this NEW reel to the the test on largemouth bass, white bass, and even a few striped bass. I must say, I’m not disappointed in the performance that Lew's has put into this particular fishing reel.
What sets it apart is the way this reel is made. The SLP series means “super low profile” , which is what that the HyperMag is built on. This is Lew’s lowest profile reel design. The HyperMag is also Lew’s lightest baitcast reel, weighing only 5.4 ounces with a one-piece magnesium frame, C45 carbon side plates and premium 11-bearing system with double-shielded stainless bearings and zero-reverse anti-reverse clutch bearing. It's a sweet little ride.
The gears are made of hard-anodized aluminum alloy and the reel’s compact size is made possible by the innovative 32mm aircraft-grade Duralumin U-shape spool. The Duralumin U-shape spool starts and accelerates faster than large spools, so it simply handles light line and lures better than traditional-size baitcasters. Rest assured this compact sized spool does not compromise power and performance.
I wanted to spotlight a few of the features that stood out to me when I put it to the test. If you're looking to buy a baitcasting reel, these are the four features I think make the HyperMag stand out among the other casting reels on the market.

4 Key Features: Team Lew's 2018 HyperMag Speed Spool
1. Premium 11-bearing system with double-shielded stainless steel ball bearings and Zero Reverse® one-way clutch bearing = Fishing Heavy Cover
On a recent fishing trip, heavy rains in the area of Norfork Lake near Mountain Home, Arkansas caused issues with high water levels. This unfortunately causes a lot of trash to be floating in the water. The challenge is when fishing close to the bank, a fisherman is now fishing brush and cover that normally wouldn’t be there. This is where the 11-bearing system of the Lew's HyperMag shines. This fast reeling reel allowed me to cast in the brush, reeling fast when needed to prevent hang ups, as well as the ability to get a fish into the boat quick instead of hanging up in the flooded brush. The bearing system is perfect for fast paced fishing because of its ability to reel a lure in quickly.
2. Bowed lightweight 95mm carbon fiber handle with Winn® Dri-Tack knobs = Great Handle
In some situations for example, you'll need a reel equipped with a handle that will reels in smooth without hesitation. A good example is fishing with lures such as a jig that relies on the fisherman for all of its movement in the water. This is where the Lew's HyperMag steps up.It comes with a large handle that is smooth, easy to feel and it features the popular Winn Dri-Tac handle grips.
These important features allows you a good feel of the handle in all weather conditions, as well as when reeling fish in quickly, with no slipping. Fishermen many times don't put a lot of thought into a handle as being a feature of a fishing reel however, on this reel, the handle is very noticeable.

3. One-piece magnesium frame with C45 carbon sideplates = Lightweight
Another noticeable feature of the HyperMag is how lightweight it is. This reel has a one-piece magnesium frame with lightweight carbon sideplates, lightweight anodized aluminum alloy gears, as well as a duralumin drilled and chamfered U-shape 32mm spool. All of these being made of lightweight materials provides a noticeable light feel when a fisherman first picks up this reel. These features allow for less fatigue when fishing tournaments, or spending a weekend on the water. This too is a great feature when fishing high action lures as the lightweight reel is easy on the wrist and hands allowing you to fish longer.
4. Rugged carbon fiber drag system provides up to 20 lbs. of drag power = All Around Fishing Reel
When fishing for multiple species of fish, it is nice to be able to use the same setup for all. The HyperMag is just as good throwing lightweight lures for largemouth as it is on the heavier fish such as white bass and strippers. Its the drag system in the HyperMag which is made with a rugged carbon fiber that allows it to handle bigger fish. When I tested this reel I used the SeaGuar Abrazx fishing line in a 12lb test.
This is a line that allows the fisherman to feel the lure better, it combined with the all around qualities of the HyperMag, had me amazed at the ease of throwing such lures as the Peanut Butter and Jelly colored ⅜ oz. Strike King Tour Grade Football Jig.
I felt as comfortable as when I was fishing with a larger jerkbait like the 4 ¼” Clown color Strike King KVD Jerkbait. The Lew's HyperMag SLP fishing reel is excellent for both types of fishing.
