There’s still plenty of time to take a long-bearded tom. Surveys show that by the third week of spring gobbler season many hunters hang up their shotguns and bows until fall. By adapting your strategies to the unique challenges of late spring hunting, though, the final week or two of the season can be a dynamite time to take a sharp-spurred tom.

It’s the start of spring turkey season, so it’s also a good time to brush up on your hunting safety. Since turkeys have good eyesight, a successful hunter must blend in well with his or her surroundings. However that also increases the hunter's risk of injuries or fatalities if other hunters mistake you for the bird, or fail to see you behind or in line with your decoy(s) or in your blind.

In today's world the majority of turkey hunters do not have the luxury of being able to hunt on different land everyday of the season. Finding land to lease or get an old-fashioned hand shake for permission to hunt someone else's land is getting harder to find. Because of having to hunt the same land day after day it is easy to pressure the turkey population that you do have or in some instances educate your gobblers, which makes them harder to call in for the shot.

Turkeys can drive hunters to tears and tremors. How can a bird with a brain the size of a walnut outwit us so often? But that’s the game, and it’s what makes bagging a bird – especially a wily old longbeard – so satisfying. When a particular tom has you turned inside out trying to drop the hammer on him, maybe you need to consider employing some turkey hunting tag team tactics.
