About a year ago, I booked three days of fishing in the Louisiana Marsh with New Orleans’ Captain Greg Moon for the fall of 2014. This was a departure from my prior trips and the thinking that the coldest months were the only times the famed monster bull redfish entered The Marsh. My discussion with Greg about the earlier dates was based on the excellent results he had been getting year-round: he simply had to crack the code of where the giant fish were located.

In past times, when the angling travel press wrote about peacock bass, it inevitably involved Brazilian jungles. But the emergence of a fabulous Florida peacock bass fishery from Palm Beach to Homestead on the Sunshine State’s Gold Coast has changed that forever. While Florida’s peacocks (actually a cichlid, not a bass) are smaller than their Amazonian brethren, some of them are now pushing eight pounds and put up a strong fight.

Though there’s a stretch of summer swelter between, the seasons will turn and fall will arrive before you know it. It’s a magic time along Florida’s southwest coast, with all manner of minnows, sardines, and such cascading south along the beaches and mangrove points as the days get shorter.

In a selfish kind of way, I'm glad that flats anglers headed to Florida, the Bahamas, the Yucatan and Belize bypass barracuda for bonefish, tarpon and permit. That translates into a less pressured species that we 'cuda addicts drool over. I like to call them the "Cheetahs of the Flats" because when sharks prowl the flats for finny food, they simply cannot generate the speed and sharp toothed aggression that barracuda demonstrate in response to a properly presented lure or live bait.

Admittedly, Florida, is full of star studded angling destinations that feature diverse and numerous gamefish.

There are a small number of fabled destinations for fisherfolk who ply marine salt - waters: Key West exemplifies one of these special places that belong in the lifetime and memories of every angler. One big reason is that our "southernmost city" has an offering of fishy habitats that few other cities in the US can match. Let's take a look.
