Like it or not, winter provides inevitable downtimes in outdoor pursuits, periods when factors such as unreasonable weather or closed seasons eliminate any options. One of my favorite indoor activities during these times is planning fishing trips for the coming year.

Unlike in summertime, water in the winter in deep lakes doesn’t always get colder as you fish deeper. Water is heaviest at 39.2º Fahrenheit and sinks. So if you can’t find fish in the colder upper levels, try dropping a bait down into the “warm” water right on the bottom.

Cold fronts turn fish off like a switch, but they can also go on a feeding binge just before the front hits. Watch the weather reports and be there when it happens.

A fishing logbook or logbook App on your phone will help improve your odds as a fisherman. Logging your trips won’t guarantee you success on every outing, but it will definitely increase your chances of catching fish during every season of the year.

Don’t be afraid to change baits when fishing slows down. Giving bass a new look is sometimes all it takes to put several of them in your boat.
