With many fish over the 20-inch mark, Lake Superior’s Chequamegon Bay has some of the best smallmouth bass fishing the state has to offer.  They don’t disappear when hard water shows up.  Understanding where smallies sit in the bay and the best ways to target these large predators will make your day on the ice much more successful.

1.    Stick To Structure

If you want to catch bass fishing windy days in early spring, find windy banks. Many times, you’ll find that these areas hold the warmest available water on the lake you’re fishing. Baitfish will usually be found there, and of course, bass are going to be there too.

Like many of you, I use artificial fishing baits and lures 95 percent of the time when targeting bass.  But if there’s a period when it makes sense to dip into the minnow bucket, it’s during autumn.
 

It’s at the time of year — at least in my part of the country where winters are an icy reality —  when bass tend to forage on minnows, big ones in particular.  This leads to a situation where large, live minnows can be effective.
 

Fishing the late fall shift on northern lakes has its advantages. Largemouth bass can be relatively easy to locate and, for the most part, will be the largest you will find them all season long.
