Dutch Oven Pizza

Use your Dutch Oven to pizza when camping

Pizza in a Dutch oven? Yes! And easier than you may think. Making a Dutch oven into a pizza oven is simple, just add lots of top heat.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 par-baked pizza crust (Freschetta, Boboli, Mama Mary's or your own crust that has been baked in a preheated 350 degree oven, 10-15 minutes.)

  • 1/3 cup pizza sauce

  • 2 cups shredded cheese (Mozzarella, cheddar, colby, jack or a combination of choice)

  • 1 7-ounce package sliced pepperoni

  • 1-2 cups additional ingredients as desired (See Step #6)

  • Aluminum foil or Dutch oven parchment liners

DIRECTIONS

Step 1: Preheat a 12"-14" Dutch oven with lid on to 400-450 degrees on a solid bed of coals.

Step 2: Cut approximately 2, 24" pieces of aluminum foil and place in a cross position.

Step 3: Start with a par-baked crust (Freschetta, Boboli, Mama Mary's or your own crust that has been baked in a preheated 350 degree oven, 10-15 minutes). Remove Dutch oven from coals. Place pizza crust in the middle of foil cross and lower into Dutch oven. If unsure how crust will brown, place a rack in the bottom of the Dutch oven to diffuse heat.

Step 4: Add pizza sauce and spread to 1/3" of the crust edge. Use a premade sauce or make your own using a 1:1 ratio of tomato paste and V-8 or spicy tomato sauce.

Step 5: Add a few handfuls of cheese (mozzarella, cheddar, colby, jack or a combination of choice).

Step 6: Add toppings; this is where you can get creative. For camping purposes, look for shelf stable items such as bagged pepperoni, canned sliced olives, mushrooms, artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomatoes and/or pineapple chunks. Toppings can also include fresh vegetables and a variety of proteins. Dice vegetables and pre-cook protein ahead of time and place in baggies. Try ground venison, sausage, shrimp, smoked salmon, bell peppers, onion, spinach, zucchini or roasted kale. TOPPING TIP: Keep toppings to a double layer. Don't pile toppings too high as pizza will not cook properly.

Step 7: Put the lid on the Dutch oven. Place Dutch oven on 8-10 evenly spaced coals for bottom heat. Load the lid with a solid bed of coals for top heat. Bake approximately 15-20 minutes or until bottom crust is golden brown and cheese is melted.

Step 8: Remove pizza from Dutch oven by carefully lifting foil onto cutting surface. Top with additional fresh herbs or vegetables (sliced tomato, basil, parsley, cilantro, chives or green onion) for garnish if desired.
