Every summer when the heavy rains hit, it seems like our favorite rivers muddy up for an eternity. At this point during the summer season, fly anglers have a choice: Either start fishing local lakes and reservoirs or find ways to catch fish in these adverse river conditions.

Fly fishing for smallmouth bass is one of my favorite summertime activities. My only problem is deciding whether to fish them topwater or subsurface.

In order to get the flies to where the big steelhead lay, one has to use patterns that are able to be weighted or fished with weights to hold them tight to the bottom. When fishing these types of streamers, eggs or nymph patterns, detecting strikes can be very difficult.

Wisconsin is known for its pristine water ways that combine great water quality and high nutrient load, making them very susceptible to harboring large amounts of aquatic invertebrates.
