One of our nation's hardest fighting fish is the hybrid striped bass, which congregate in the free-flowing tailrace waters below major reservoir dams while answering nature's false call for the spring spawn.

Captain Butch Moser has been fishing the inland lakes and canals of western Palm Beach County since the early 1980s. Prior to that, he fished saltwater off the same coast for 20 years.

It’s mid- to late winter for most of us around the United States. Those of you who live close to the oceans, or in the South, are cold but not frozen. And the bass fishing can still be good if you take the time to change your tactics and change your thinking.

In spring, white bass seek tributaries of major reservoirs for spawning runs. It is during these spawning runs, when thousands of whites are concentrated in small streams, that most white bass are taken during the year. In fact, for some white-bass aficionados, there's no season but spring. When spawning runs end, so does the fishing.  

Bass, as you probably know, are cold-blooded creatures, meaning their body temperature is the same as that of their surroundings. As the water temperature drops, so does their metabolic level. The digestive process is greatly slowed; according to Doug Hannon, ESPN's Bass Professor, it takes a bass about four hours to digest a meal in 80-degree water, four days in 50-degree water!

Shaye Baker maintained his lead at the Bassmaster Classic Wild Card event on Lake Okeechobee in Florida. His two-day total is 48 pounds 14 ounces, giving him a lead of 5 pounds 13 ounces over Plano pro Chad Morgenthaler who has 43 pounds 1 ounce.
