They are not tough to find and catch in numbers, but the big ones seem to disappear. The problem is quality and size is generally poor. The big fish have moved out, and here is how to find them. After the spawn in early June, the bull bluegills (fish over 8.5”) head to the first available break line looking for food and cover. Weed edges are the place to look from 6’ to 12’ on clear lakes and 3 to 6’ on the dark water lakes. The really stained tannic waters will not support weeds deeper than a few feet. Where the weeds stop is where the larger fish will be for about a month. A small <strong><a href="https://www.basspro.com/p/bass-pro-shops-weighted-torpedo-foam-floats?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=fishing_panfish_summer-bluegills-in-the-north" target="_blank" title="Shop Bass Pro Shops Weighted Torpedo Bobbers">fishing bobber</a></strong> and 1/32-ounce jig tipped with <strong><a href="https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/berkley-gulp%21-maggots" target="_blank" title="Shop Berkley Gulp Maggots at Bass Pro Shops">Berkley GULP Maggots</a></strong> will do the trick. The larger fish won’t like to come up for the jig,so place the jig about 3.5’ or more under the float. Use 4# to 6# <strong><a href="https://www.basspro.com/p/berkley-trilene-xl-smooth-casting-line-filler-spool?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=fishing_panfish_summer-bluegills-in-the-north" target="_blank" title="Shop Berkley Trilene at Bass Pro Shops">Berkley Trilene fishing line</a></strong> or Fireline, a medium light rod, and a size 10 spinning reel.</p> <p>Finding the bluegills is easy with a Humminbird Side Imaging s<img alt="Pros4-1Source's Keith Worrall with a big bluegill caught on Berkley Gulp" data-entity-type="image" data-entity-uuid="0" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/Nice%20Bluegill%20Released%20to%20Fight%20Another%20Day.jpg" class="align-left" />onar, just cruise the edges marking waypoints where you see groups of fish on the edges. Frequently the crappies will hang out with the larger bluegills, which usually is not something one would complain about. Once you have several schools marked, go back and methodically fish each school by spot-locking on them with Minn Kota or deploying a <strong><a href="https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/SearchDisplay?categoryId=&amp;storeId=715838534&amp;catalogId=3074457345616676768&amp;langId=-1&amp;sType=SimpleSearch&amp;resultCatEntryType=2&amp;showResultsPage=true&amp;searchSource=Q&amp;pageView=&amp;beginIndex=0&amp;pageSize=16&amp;searchTerm=Talon+Shallow+water+anchor#facet:&amp;productBeginIndex:0&amp;facetLimit:&amp;orderBy:&amp;pageView:grid&amp;minPrice:&amp;maxPrice:&amp;pageSize:&amp;" target="_blank" title="Shop Talon Shallow Water Anchors at Bass Pro Shops">Talon shallow water anchor</a></strong> and begin looking for the nice ones.</p> <p>A <strong><a href="https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/SearchDisplay?categoryId=&amp;storeId=715838534&amp;catalogId=3074457345616676768&amp;langId=-1&amp;sType=SimpleSearch&amp;resultCatEntryType=2&amp;showResultsPage=true&amp;searchSource=Q&amp;pageView=&amp;beginIndex=0&amp;pageSize=16&amp;searchTerm=fly+rod#facet:&amp;productBeginIndex:0&amp;facetLimit:&amp;orderBy:&amp;pageView:grid&amp;minPrice:&amp;maxPrice:&amp;pageSize:&amp;" target="_blank" title="Shop Fly Rods at Bass Pro Shops">fly rod</a></strong> and small popper can really be fun if fly fishing is your preferred presentation. I would wait for late evening to fish them with a fly or popper, as with the low light the bluegills will rise to a presentation more readily.</p> <p>As Summer progresses to middle July onward, a rarely fished pattern emerges that can offer some of the best fishing of the season. Search out mid-lake humps that come up to within a few feet of the surface, and stay off the top, that will support lots of smaller fish. Fish the deep edges around the hump vertical jigging with a 1/16 th ounce jig and the above-mentioned GULP. When you contact a school of tanker bluegills, hit the spot-lock and hold on them moving along slowly the direction the school seems to be<br /> moving. They will move along slowly, if the action slows a bit, move along the direction of the last couple captures. Weed humps are not better than rocks, the fishing depends on what the bluegills are eating, and both can provide the insects they prefer. Walleyes, small mouth , rock bass, and other fish will be mixed in with your catch. The bluegills will be there all the way until Autumn.</p> <h2>Bluegills in Rivers</h2> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-img align-right"><img alt="The author Steve Worrall with a dandy bluegill" data-entity-type="image" data-entity-uuid="0" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/Pros4-%201Source's%20Steve%20Worrall.jpg" /><figcaption><strong>The author Steve Worrall with a dandy<br /> Bluegill caught just off the edge of the<br /> weeds in 8 feet of water.</strong></figcaption></figure><p>Back bays in June to early July will fish like the lake techniques discussed above. The big bluegills will be in the current breaks at the tip of the wing dam. Cast a 1/16 th ounce tipped jig into the pockets and let the current run it into the fish. And often are easily capable of out-fishing the real thing.</p> <p>As a bonus, artificial bait banish the hassles of live bait. You don’t have to drive around looking for a bait shop or spend time digging worms, and they never go belly up or stink up the minnow bucket or refrigerator.</p> <p>Options abound, but a top choice is the Northland Fishing Tackle Impulse Jig’n Tail Slug Bug. The 1.25-inch bait is perfect for slab bluegills, crappies and yellow perch, and comes pre-rigged on a 1/64-ounce bug-eyed jighead for ultimate ease of use.</p> <p>Infused with patented Impulse scents and flavors that attract panfish and encourage them to bite and not let go, the Slug Bug sports a soft, segmented torso, slugworm feet and a thin, wiggling tail.</p> <p>Other great soft-plastic options include Northland’s Scud Bug and Impulse Helium Series Stonefly Jig. Softbait icon Berkley also offers excellent tippings such as the PowerBait Whipworm and the Gulp! Ice Minnow.</p> <p>To fish a dainty panfish plastic, rig it on a 1/64- to 1/16-ounce jighead such as Northland’s Mud Bug, or a small Lindy Jig.</p> <p>A long, light spinning rod of 7 to 11 feet, spooled with 2-pound-test line is ideal for dipping these small artificial presentations into brush piles and open pockets in thick vegetation. Cast and retrieve or suspend the jig under a small slip float.</p> <p>When bobber fishing, avoid static, stationary approaches. Instead, cast out and then move the jig in a series of pulls and pauses to produce a seductive pendulum action. Do this by letting the bait settle, then pulling it a foot to 18 inches and letting it settle again.</p> <p>If the bite gets tough, try wacky rigging a slender softbait on a size 8 hook. Flutter it freehand in front of panfish holding tight to cover or a breakline, or twitch it below a small float.</p> <p>Armed with these baits and techniques, it’s easy to kick the live-bait habit and catch more panfish on plastics all season long.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </body></html></div> <div class="field field--name-field-region field--type-list-string field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Region</div> <div class="field__item">United States</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/panfish" hreflang="en">Panfish</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/fishing-tackle" hreflang="en">Fishing Tackle</a></div> </div> </div> Sun, 07 Jun 2020 18:53:29 +0000 Bass Pro Shops 1Source 22460 at https://1source.basspro.com https://1source.basspro.com/news-tips/panfish/22460/fishing-with-soft-plastics-panfish#comments How To Target And Catch Summer Perch https://1source.basspro.com/news-tips/panfish/28060/how-target-and-catch-summer-perch <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">How To Target And Catch Summer Perch</span> <div class="field field--name-field-image-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/images/news-tips/Perch_Fishing.png?itok=6Gtyg5IA" width="480" height="320" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" class="image-style-large" /> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><a title="View user profile." href="/user/bass-pro-shops-cabelas" lang="" about="/user/bass-pro-shops-cabelas" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" content="TStoll" class="username">Bass Pro Shops…</a></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Tue, 06/25/2019 - 09:11</span> <div class="field field--name-field-category field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Category</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/term/news-tips/fishing/panfish" hreflang="en">Panfish</a></div> </div> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="flag.link_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=28060&amp;2=bookmark" token="NyISN8EpZAaetfJq3I9bJRkrzTeE-132pA17NZZHlCc"></drupal-render-placeholder><drupal-render-placeholder callback="like_and_dislike.vote_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=28060" token="asA_EZP63f6c3cjOhxvXWnyVch3WpQw0aU2D_VfliaM"></drupal-render-placeholder> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Early in the spring, anglers often catch perch in shallow water less than 10 feet deep.</p> <p>However, as spring turns into summer, the shallow-water action for these little panfish tapers off. In order to continue enjoying the fun action and tasty meals perch offer, it’s time to change fishing locations.</p> <p>When the water starts to warm up, perch will head for deeper water areas, in the 20 to 25 foot range. The best deeper-water areas include ledges, drop-offs and deep holes, especially those with muddy bottoms. Perch will also move to deep-water areas with rocky bottoms.</p> <p>Using your electronics, slowly troll along until you can locate a school perch.</p> <p>While looking for perch on your electronics, focus on the bottom of the lake. Because perch are small, it is difficult to see single fish, so look for schools of perch which will look almost triangular in shape.</p> <p>Another method for finding perch is to troll a small worm tipped spinner rig with a bottom bouncer until you catch some.</p> <p>After you locate them, it’s time to anchor up and do a little vertical fishing.</p> <p>Small jigs and jigging spoons tipped with leeches, chunks of night crawlers or minnows seem to work best.</p> <p>Experiment while jigging to see what triggers the perch to bite. Sometimes they want to take the bait off the bottom and on other occasions they might want to hit a bait that is suspended 6 to 12 inches off the bottom. In either case, periodically bang your lure on the bottom to attract the perch by creating sounds and stirring up sediment.</p> <p>When the summer weather gets extremely hot, I have found perch will suspend at mid-depth levels over very deep water. The depth where they suspend is often in direct relation to the thermocline, and they are usually in the thermocline or just on the upper edge of it.</p> <p>During these times, perch can be caught by slowly trolling small crank baits.</p> </div> Tue, 25 Jun 2019 14:11:13 +0000 Bass Pro Shops Cabelas 28060 at https://1source.basspro.com https://1source.basspro.com/news-tips/panfish/28060/how-target-and-catch-summer-perch#comments 3 Tips for Catching More Bluegill https://1source.basspro.com/news-tips/panfish/5762/3-tips-catching-more-bluegill <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">3 Tips for Catching More Bluegill</span> <div class="field field--name-field-image-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/images/news-tips/6f123c81ec7c21bc8f11151e412b5fe5.jpg?itok=i3KnSZzE" width="480" height="320" alt="News &amp; Tips: 3 Tips for Catching More Bluegill" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" class="image-style-large" /> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><a title="View user profile." href="/user/larry-whiteley" lang="" about="/user/larry-whiteley" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" class="username">Larry Whiteley</a></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Fri, 05/29/2015 - 15:54</span> <div class="field field--name-field-category field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Category</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/term/news-tips/fishing/panfish" hreflang="en">Panfish</a></div> </div> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="flag.link_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=5762&amp;2=bookmark" token="kVo-C8n6X6NwjtBE6OrJgXLXGQGfU6f3Klr9tl5IwaQ"></drupal-render-placeholder><drupal-render-placeholder callback="like_and_dislike.vote_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=5762" token="RyCgvJtF1qHsqGq5p10LmnP04L2-mMcbHXQz2pNHeek"></drupal-render-placeholder> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p><img style="margin: 5px; float: right;" title="Bluegill" alt="blue gill" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/blue_gill.jpg" height="225" width="300" data-entity-uuid="7d01602d-e0e6-4587-ba44-f3fa47739cdd" data-entity-type="file" loading="lazy" />Worms, crickets, and other live bait will always catch bluegill, but if you want to catch more <a title="Bluegill fishing is great for a beginner angler" href="/index.php/component/k2/16-panfish/2470-learning-to-fish-bluegill-fishing-is-great-for-a-beginner-angler" target="_blank">bluegill</a>, switch to jigs. These featherweight jigs snag less and can tempt fish that may not be hungry enough to chomp a big bait. Also, enticing, erratic retrieves are possible with tiny offerings that can’t be duplicated with bigger jigs.<br /><br /></p> <p>When bluegill get picky, matching their diet with a jig imitation can bring more action. Swimming a single-tailed grub through the weeds is often enough to entice a strike.</span></td> </tr></tbody></table><p>Crickets and worms are consistent producers, but using artificial lures is a more engaging tactic that often produces the biggest bulls in the area. While these fish are aggressive, the most important ingredient in any bluegill lure is compactness. With tiny mouths, bluegills simply can’t get their lips around a big lure. If you keep this requirement in mind, they will strike a wide variety of artificials.<br /><br /></p> <p>After years of fishing for these diminutive gamefish, I’ve found five offerings consistently yield the best results. Here’s a rundown on these top choices and how to fish them:<br /><br /></p> <p><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>1. Grubs</strong></span><br /><br /></p> <p>A grub paired with a <a title="Bass Pro Shops Unpainted Jigheads arre perfect for this offering. " href="https://www.basspro.com/c/fishing?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=fishing_panfish_the-5-best-lures-for-big-bluegills" target="_blank">1/64- to 1/8- ounce lead head jig</a> is, without question, the single most productive bluegill lure. The best grub bodies are short and stubby— featuring either a single or split tail. Top colors include pumpkinseed, motor oil, smoke, chartreuse and orange. The whole lure should measure an inch or less.<br /><br /></p> <p>A slow, steady retrieve is most effective, although pausing occasionally can help in deep water. If this tactic isn’t working, try to really slow things down. Put a bobber on the line so the lure can suspend as you inch it back.<br /><br /></p> <p><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>2. Spinnerbaits</strong></span><br /><br /></p> <p>While a plain grub is usually best, sometimes the same lure rigged on a safety-pin spinnerbait frame, such as the famous <a title="Find the world famous Johnson Original Beetle Spin on basspro.com. " href="https://www.basspro.com/c/fishing?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=fishing_panfish_the-5-best-lures-for-big-bluegills" target="_blank">Beetle Spin</a>, is an even better bet. This setup provides a larger offering and the spinner adds some flash. It can really make a difference when the water is murky or fish are feeding aggressively.<br /><br /></p> <p>Though a steady retrieve is usually best, sometimes a stop and go presentation works well. Cast out, let the spinnerbait sink near the bottom, and then begin a smooth retrieve. Half way back, or when you come to a log or weed bed, pause suddenly. Bluegills will nail the lure as it drops.<br /><br /></p> <p><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>3. Inline Spinners</strong></span><br /><br /></p> <p>Another top choice for cloudy water or feeding fish is an inline spinner. Some I’ve had good luck with include Mepps, Blue Fox, Panther Martin, and the <a title="Click to check out our selection of Worden's Rooster Tails on basspro.com. Choose small models and stock a variety of blade colors.  Silver, gold, black, and fluorescent hues should all have a place in your tackle box.<br /><br /></p> <p>Retrieve spinners slowly and steadily. Reel just fast enough to get the blade revolving. Strikes are often belligerent.<br /><br /></p> <p><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>4. Carolina Rigs</strong></span><br /><br /></p> <p>You’ve likely used this setup for bass, but Carolina-style rigging is also a productive way to catch bluegills. Rig an <a title="These Bass Pro Shops Egg Sinkers will do the trick! Another option is a small grub, hooked through the head, just 1/8-inch in from the tip, on a size eight to ten short-shank hook. This setup is especially appealing to fish on heavily-pressured waters and clear lakes. But be forewarned—you might hook into an eight-pound bass!<br /><br /></p> <p><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>5. Spoons</strong></span><br /><br /></p> <p>Small versions of these wobbling chunks of metal can be excellent choices for bluegills in both lakes and rivers. Cast to cover or eddies in streams and retrieve just fast enough to make the spoon undulate seductively. Silver, gold, green, and black are the best colors.<br /><br /></p> <p>For fish holding in deep areas in winter or summer, slab-type jigging spoons are especially effective. Position yourself above your quarry or likely structure. Lower the spoon to the appropriate level, and then jig it slowly and rhythmically up and down.  It should move 6 to 18 inches with pauses between the lifts. Most fish will strike on the drop, so be ready. If a bull bluegill is nearby, a thumping take is almost guaranteed!<br /><br /></p> <p>For more info on kid-friendly panfish setups check out <a title="Read this article by Bill Cooper for more info on kid-friendly summer bluegill fishing." href="/index.php/component/k2/16-panfish/2838-5-easy-ways-to-make-the-most-of-summer-bluegill-fishing-blog" target="_blank">5 Easy Ways to Make the Most of Summer Bluegill Fishing</a> on Bass Pro Shops 1Source.<br /><br /></p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-region field--type-list-string field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Region</div> <div class="field__item">United States</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/bluegill" hreflang="en">Bluegill</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/panfish" hreflang="en">Panfish</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/fishing-tip" hreflang="en">Fishing Tip</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/fishing-tackle" hreflang="en">Fishing Tackle</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/how-guide" hreflang="en">How To Guide</a></div> </div> </div> Sat, 09 May 2015 11:30:00 +0000 Gerald Almy 5358 at https://1source.basspro.com https://1source.basspro.com/news-tips/panfish/5358/5-best-lures-big-bluegills#comments 3 Reasons to Fish Fast for Panfish https://1source.basspro.com/news-tips/panfish/6076/3-reasons-fish-fast-panfish <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">3 Reasons to Fish Fast for Panfish</span> <div class="field field--name-field-image-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/images/news-tips/90b099de27185a950237991ff2a3ceff.jpg?itok=oohVEJrI" width="480" height="320" alt="News &amp; Tips: 3 Reasons to Fish Fast for Panfish" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" class="image-style-large" /> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><a title="View user profile." href="/user/tim-allard" lang="" about="/user/tim-allard" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" class="username">Tim Allard</a></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Mon, 09/08/2014 - 15:00</span> <div class="field field--name-field-category field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Category</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/term/news-tips/fishing/panfish" hreflang="en">Panfish</a></div> </div> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="flag.link_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=6076&amp;2=bookmark" token="e5C6lF7Twf90QfyYbPM-evkQ58EzN_Po9CKu9ZuRs_c"></drupal-render-placeholder><drupal-render-placeholder callback="like_and_dislike.vote_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=6076" token="2hLXJwJPOlLX4xZ02Kk9QX3geZIzacaAWrXRM9Fj4aI"></drupal-render-placeholder> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p><img style="border: 1px solid #000000; margin: 10px; float: right;" alt="3ReasonsFishFastPanfish blog" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/3ReasonsFishFastPanfish_blog.jpg" height="200" width="300" data-entity-uuid="b633c2f7-a8b1-48de-beb9-0134a316eef1" data-entity-type="file" loading="lazy" />While there is a time and place for slow presentations for panfish, I'm here to tell you that fishing fast is a great way to catch more and bigger sunfish, crappie and yellow perch.<br /><br /></p> <p><strong><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Reason 1: It Covers Water and Finds Fish Faster</span></strong></p> <p>Part of why I like crappie fishing so much is that these fish are such a challenge to track down. Yes, some days their elusiveness leaves me scratching my head, but when I locate a school it makes the hard work worth it. Dillydallying with slow, methodical tactics is not how I search out crappie. It's run-and-gun, and fan-casting or trolling <a title="Shop for baits at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/l/lures?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=fishing_panfish_3-reasons-to-fish-fast-for-panfish" target="_blank">baits</a> to sniff out calicos. The faster I can fish bays, weed edges, timber areas, deep points and other hangouts, the more I can explore in a day. This same concept applies to bluegills and yellow perch, especially when you're after big ones.<br /><br /></p> <p><strong><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Reason 2: Fast Bait = Hard Hit</span></strong></p> <p>Generally, fish tend to hit a bait only as aggressively as they need to overtake it. A slow falling <a title="Shop for tube jigs at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/p/bass-pro-shops-goof-e-tube-jighead?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=fishing_panfish_3-reasons-to-fish-fast-for-panfish" target="_blank">tube jig</a> will get eaten with minimal fuss. A fast <a title="Shop for spinnerbaits at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/l/spinnerbaits-buzzbaits?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=fishing_panfish_3-reasons-to-fish-fast-for-panfish" target="_blank">spinnerbait</a>, on the other hand, will get crushed by crappie and perch. I've seen bluegills scrutinize and peck at a slow-retrieved <a title="Shop for crankbaits at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/l/lures?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=fishing_panfish_3-reasons-to-fish-fast-for-panfish" target="_blank">crankbait</a>. Speed up and hits get more aggressive, which leads to more hook-ups. Get a bait moving and you can stimulate panfish to respond with assertive attacks.<br /><br /></p> <p><strong><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Reason 3: Fast Appeals to Big Fish</span></strong></p> <p>Years ago I was vertically jigging bluegills with my wife. We were in 25 feet of water and began the day with small jig spinners. This caught us several fish, but I was curious if bigger fish were around. I tied on a <a title="Shop for spoons at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/p/bass-pro-shops-demon-dancer-spoon?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=fishing_panfish_3-reasons-to-fish-fast-for-panfish" target="_blank">spoon</a> and started snapping it up off bottom, then letting it fall on controlled slack. This got the big fish interested in a hurry. Soon we were both hauling up chunky bluegills on metal baits.<br /><br /></p> <p>Fishing fast for panfish is fun. It brings out their aggressive nature and hard-hits on light gear is a hoot. Add more velocity to lures and you'll pull more pannies over the boat gunnel.</p> <p> </p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-region field--type-list-string field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Region</div> <div class="field__item">International</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/fishing-tackle" hreflang="en">Fishing Tackle</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/panfish" hreflang="en">Panfish</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/fishing-tip" hreflang="en">Fishing Tip</a></div> </div> </div> Mon, 08 Sep 2014 20:00:00 +0000 Tim Allard 6076 at https://1source.basspro.com https://1source.basspro.com/news-tips/panfish/6076/3-reasons-fish-fast-panfish#comments Panfish: Strike Indicators & Wet Fly Rigs That Work https://1source.basspro.com/news-tips/panfish/6185/panfish-strike-indicators-wet-fly-rigs-work <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Panfish: Strike Indicators &amp; Wet Fly Rigs That Work</span> <div class="field field--name-field-image-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/images/news-tips/b2ed404cd66d00ae6bf0e3c40c635b81.jpg?itok=iRw0tudW" width="480" height="320" alt="News &amp; Tips: Panfish: Strike Indicators &amp; Wet Fly Rigs That Work..." loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" class="image-style-large" /> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><a title="View user profile." href="/user/steve-galea" lang="" about="/user/steve-galea" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" class="username">Steve Galea</a></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Wed, 07/23/2014 - 16:53</span> <div class="field field--name-field-category field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Category</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/term/news-tips/fishing/panfish" hreflang="en">Panfish</a></div> </div> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="flag.link_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=6185&amp;2=bookmark" token="ZOmUu-KHpOrirnrLeVb-MxiqnbVpSzpYtkLsQlnqhCw"></drupal-render-placeholder><drupal-render-placeholder callback="like_and_dislike.vote_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=6185" token="MXfdkKXbY47hNr9ybuXdxQ6oUAy-OGbBtHIIaEQEq0s"></drupal-render-placeholder> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Every now and then I get the urge to catch a mess of <a title="Shop panfish tackle at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/c/fishing?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=fishing_panfish_panfish-strike-indicators-wet-fly-rigs-that-work" target="_blank">panfish</a> for a<a title="How to fillet panfish at Bass Pro 1Source" href="/index.php/component/k2/232-general-fishing/2739-6-easy-how-to-steps-to-fillet-bass-crappie-perch-infographic" target="_blank"> fish fry</a>. Often, it’s difficult keeping them off your line.<br /><br /></p> <p>The real trick is finding a school of larger ones and catching as many you can before you lose contact. That’s a whole different ball game.<br /><br /></p> <p>I find two basic pieces of information are worth remembering when doing this.<br /><br /></p> <p>First, they hang out in like-sized schools. That means, if I am catching runts I move on until I find a larger specimens. Second, they prefer to relate to structures such as rocky shoals, weedy drop offs or downed timber.<br /><br /></p> <p>When I’m prospecting for them, I’ll often use a <a title="Shop strike indicators for fishing at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/p/lightning-strike-round-foam-strike-indicators?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=fishing_panfish_panfish-strike-indicators-wet-fly-rigs-that-work" target="_blank">strike indicator</a> and <a title="Nymph fishing tackle at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/p/prince-nymph-flies-12-pack?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=fishing_panfish_panfish-strike-indicators-wet-fly-rigs-that-work" target="_blank">nymph</a> (or wet fly) rig, especially when the fish are relating to submerged timber or high aquatic vegetation. This allows me more precise control of my fly in terms of depth. And it also allows me to fish the small, open pockets amidst the branches or weed beds.<br /><br /></p> <p>I adjust my indicator so that the nymph or wet fly I’m using will hover above the school or in the midst of it. Wet flies such as small wooly worms, <a title="Black gnat lures at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/p/k-e-stopper-lures-black-gnat-fly-assortment?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=fishing_panfish_panfish-strike-indicators-wet-fly-rigs-that-work" target="_blank">black gnats</a> or soft-hackles work great. So too do nymphs like <a title="Shop pheasant tails at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/p/pheasant-tail-flies-12-pack?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=fishing_panfish_panfish-strike-indicators-wet-fly-rigs-that-work" target="_blank">pheasant tails</a>, hare’s ear’s and prince nymphs.<br /><br /></p> <p>Once your fly has settled among the school, a slight twitch or two is generally what it takes to coax one into charging in. Then, as soon as your indicator moves to the side, or goes down, set the hook and haul out the fish as quickly as possible so minimal disturbance is caused. Repeat until the school has moved on.<br /><br /></p> <p>If fish are particularly skittish, sometimes it helps to use whatever current is available. Research Spots that Hold Bluegill Populations</strong><br /></span></p> <p>Bluegill fishing used to be as simple as going to the local pond or creek. It still is if you live in a rural area. However, if you don't live in the country, begin your search close to home. City and county parks often maintain small ponds and lakes. Most of them will hold bluegill populations. If you want to travel farther from home, check the websites for your state park system and conservation department. Both agencies offer fishing sites and quite often, fishing instruction programs. Many loan equipment, too.<br /><br /></p> <p><strong><span style="font-size: 14pt;">3. Use Live Fishing Bait</span></strong></p> <table style="border-collapse: separate; border-spacing: 10px; width: 215px;" align="right"><tbody><tr><td><img style="border: 1px solid #000000;" title="5 Easy Ways to Make the Most of Summer Bluegill Fishing" alt="TipsSummerBluegill blog" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/TipsSummerBluegill_blog.jpg" height="225" width="215" data-entity-uuid="67111d0c-f271-4446-a0c6-a0d1e49c74fb" data-entity-type="file" loading="lazy" /></td> </tr><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #808080;"><strong><span style="font-size: 10pt;">Kids love fishing for bluegill.</span></strong></span></td> </tr></tbody></table><p>Bluegill are voracious eaters of small insects, crustaceans and worms. A wriggly worm or kicking cricket will attract bluegills quickly. Live baits are especially interesting to children. Kids will often spend more time playing with the bait than fishing. My 4-year-old granddaughter, Ally, once gave all 12 of my minnows names before we used them for bait. She asked dozens of questions about the minnows and the fish that would eat them. The enjoyable conversation gave grandpa the open door to teach simple conservation concepts.<br /><br /></p> <p><strong><span style="font-size: 14pt;">4. For Bigger Fish, Go Deeper</span></strong></p> <p>Bluegill can be found in every sector of a pond or small lake. Kids like fast action and catching plenty of bluegill will not be a problem. On the other hand, to catch bigger bluegill, you will often have to fish a little deeper to get away from the hordes of smaller fish. Dropping your bait a few feet down near a boat dock piling, or other structure, will do the trick.<br /><br /></p> <p><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>5. Have Fun Fishing</strong><br /></span></p> <p>Most serious bluegill fishermen will tell you that they fish for bluegills because it is so much fun. Bluegill are aggressive and tremendous fighters for their size. They are a blast to catch on light tackle and have the habit of running perpendicular to the line, causing them to feel 10 times their size. Fishing memories, which will last a lifetime, are often the product of a simple bluegill fishing trip.</p> <p> </p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-region field--type-list-string field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Region</div> <div class="field__item">International</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/bluegill" hreflang="en">Bluegill</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/fishing-tip" hreflang="en">Fishing Tip</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/summer" hreflang="en">Summer</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/panfish" hreflang="en">Panfish</a></div> </div> </div> Thu, 17 Jul 2014 20:00:00 +0000 Bill Cooper 6201 at https://1source.basspro.com https://1source.basspro.com/news-tips/panfish/6201/5-easy-ways-make-most-summer-bluegill-fishing#comments 10 Proven Tactics to Score More Summer Panfish https://1source.basspro.com/news-tips/panfish/6217/10-proven-tactics-score-more-summer-panfish <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">10 Proven Tactics to Score More Summer Panfish</span> <div class="field field--name-field-image-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/images/news-tips/b013967d0c5b1a46e7c340ef19bdd2d7.jpg?itok=FSo5y2fn" width="480" height="320" alt="News &amp; Tips: 10 Proven Tactics to Score More Summer Panfish..." loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" class="image-style-large" /> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><a title="View user profile." href="/user/gerald-almy" lang="" about="/user/gerald-almy" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" class="username">Gerald Almy</a></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Fri, 07/11/2014 - 06:00</span> <div class="field field--name-field-category field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Category</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/term/news-tips/fishing/panfish" hreflang="en">Panfish</a></div> </div> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="flag.link_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=6217&amp;2=bookmark" token="F9Y2fCdWPn2Y5qA5b01nc1Tc3vsBDQstWQPknVBNSl4"></drupal-render-placeholder><drupal-render-placeholder callback="like_and_dislike.vote_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=6217" token="3-hZANVcu5qDENRh7VKfoPwkSAZScgIulnPS7q2hOVA"></drupal-render-placeholder> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>No fish are more appealing to go after on a hot summer day than panfish. White and chartreuse </strong><strong><a title="Shop all jigs at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/l/bass-jigs?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=fishing_panfish_10-proven-tactics-to-score-more-summer-panfish" target="_blank">jigs</a> are top offerings for white bass in 1/8-1/4 ounce sizes.</strong> Try a variety of retrieves, starting with slow steady reeling. If that doesn't produce, pause part way back and let the lure drop for a few seconds like a wounded minnow. For a third approach, try reeling a few feet, then twitching, reeling, then twitching.<br /><br /></p> <p><strong>#2. One of the top spots to find crappies in summer is around bridge pilings.</strong> These concrete spans offer shade and structure for the fish to hang out next to and ambush baitfish that fin past. Work the pilings closest to land first. Then probe those where the creek or river channel drops off into deeper water if they don't produce. Use marabou or plastic tailed jigs or small live shiners suspended beneath a bobber.<br /><br /></p> <p><strong>#3. If you missed the spring bluegill spawn, don't fret.</strong> These fish often return to the shallows to breed a second and even third time through July. Look for the beds in 1 to 4 feet of water during full moon periods.<br /><br /></p> <p><strong>#4. When white bass are hard to locate, try trolling.</strong> This lets you present the fish with several lure choices at one time and probe a variety of depths. Top offerings include silver <a title="Shop for spoons at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/p/bass-pro-shops-demon-dancer-spoon?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=fishing_panfish_10-proven-tactics-to-score-more-summer-panfish" target="_blank">spoons</a>, small <a title="Shop for crankbaits at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/c/fishing?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=fishing_panfish_10-proven-tactics-to-score-more-summer-panfish" target="_blank">crankbaits</a>, diving thin-<a title="Shop for minnows at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/p/bass-pro-shops-xts-lures-pencil-plug?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=fishing_panfish_10-proven-tactics-to-score-more-summer-panfish" target="_blank">minnow plugs</a>, <a title="Shop for lipless crankbaits at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/c/fishing?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=fishing_panfish_10-proven-tactics-to-score-more-summer-panfish" target="_blank">lipless crankbaits</a> and jig-spinner combos. One of the top baits for yellow perch is a small live minnow.</strong> If you don't have any or run out of bait, try this trick. Cut a thin tapered strip of white belly meat from one of the fish you've already caught. It should be 1/4- to 1/2-inch wide at the end and taper for 1-2 inches to a thin tip. This offering also works on crappies, bluegills, rock bass and pickerel. <br /><br /></p> <p><strong>#7. A top lure for bluegills is a grub with a short stubby plastic body.</strong> Fish it slowly-just fast enough to keep it off the bottom. Part way back, pause briefly to draw strikes from trailing fish. Use 1/32- to 1/8-ounce versions in brown, green, black, smoke and purple. <br /><br /></p> <p><strong>#9. Try chumming if fishing is slow.</strong> Keep egg shells from your breakfast, crumple them up and sprinkle overboard. The slowly descending fragments will flutter through the water and draw in both baitfish and panfish.<br /><br /></p> <p><strong>#10. When fishing lakes, try these spots for panfish:</strong> inlets, outlets, points, coves, weed beds, areas with fallen trees or brush, underwater humps, springs, rock piles, flats and drop-offs. <br /><br /></p> <p>When these tips pay off for you, be sure to keep a few specimens for a fish fry. Most of these species breed prolifically and thrive when they their numbers are kept in check. Deep fry them dipped in batter or saute in lemon and butter. After all, there's a reason they're called "pan" fish: they're delicious!</p> <p> </p> <p> </p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-region field--type-list-string field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Region</div> <div class="field__item">International</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/how-guide" hreflang="en">How To Guide</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/panfish" hreflang="en">Panfish</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/fishing-tip" hreflang="en">Fishing Tip</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/summer" hreflang="en">Summer</a></div> </div> </div> Fri, 11 Jul 2014 11:00:00 +0000 Gerald Almy 6217 at https://1source.basspro.com https://1source.basspro.com/news-tips/panfish/6217/10-proven-tactics-score-more-summer-panfish#comments Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee is Panfish Paradise for Anglers https://1source.basspro.com/news-tips/panfish/7582/reelfoot-lake-tennessee-panfish-paradise-anglers <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee is Panfish Paradise for Anglers</span> <div class="field field--name-field-image-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/images/news-tips/85c4bf4a17518ae7c18aac91b705bdac.jpg?itok=-QjXTr_y" width="480" height="320" alt="News &amp; Tips: Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee is Panfish Paradise for Anglers..." loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" class="image-style-large" /> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><a title="View user profile." href="/user/gerald-almy" lang="" about="/user/gerald-almy" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" class="username">Gerald Almy</a></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Sat, 06/07/2014 - 06:00</span> <div class="field field--name-field-category field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Category</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/term/news-tips/fishing/panfish" hreflang="en">Panfish</a></div> </div> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="flag.link_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=7582&amp;2=bookmark" token="lfKX9ngCXeAkgcswGR4Yh7_LSnRIHR5F-j6tK4TRAUU"></drupal-render-placeholder><drupal-render-placeholder callback="like_and_dislike.vote_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=7582" token="KuoVw4kp0e6Xx1i6crLXWX8Ueph1ioQJIdzz1tmTJas"></drupal-render-placeholder> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>When a violent earthquake struck the Mississippi River valley during the bitter cold winter of 1811, aftershocks rumbled throughout a 2,000-square-mile area for months. From May through September, though, it's the panfish that are most sought, including crappies and especially bluegills.<br /><br /></p> <p>Reelfoot is so blanketed with cover that bass boats are tough to use here — too many weeds, fallen trees and submerged logs. Either rugged jon boats or special "lake boats" made exclusively for fishing and hunting on Reelfoot can be rented at marinas and resorts around the lake for a modest fee. The "lake boats" tend to slip right over sharp stumps lurking under the surface and offer quick, sure access to the best fishing spots.<br /><br /></p> <p>Reelfoot is a very good bass lake. But the favorite quarry for most anglers is the panfish in its various configurations. These include bluegills, yellow bass, pumpkinseeds, redbreasts, shellcrackers (redears) and crappies.<br /><br /></p> <p><strong><img style="margin: 2px; float: left;" alt="1 arrow point" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/1_arrow_point_1272.jpg" height="15" width="17" data-entity-uuid="42c053f3-9d2b-4be7-9d2c-70a22952b706" data-entity-type="file" loading="lazy" />Tip:</strong> <a title="Top 4 Baits to Catch Crappie" href="/index.php/component/k2/124-crappie-fishing/2527-top-4-baits-to-catch-crappie" target="_blank">Top 4 Baits to Catch Crappie</a></p> <p>Bluegills are the most popular of all. While I joined them with that technique for a while, I soon switched to my favorite angling method of all-fly fishing. Casting black or green sponge rubber spiders and working them back with slow twitches yielded action just as fast as the grubs. Sometimes the spider worked well right on the surface. Other times I would add a small <a title="Shop all split shot at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/p/bass-pro-shops-124-piece-reusable-split-shot-weight-assortment?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=fishing_panfish_reelfoot-lake-in-tennessee-is-panfish-paradise-for-anglers" target="_blank">split shot</a> a foot or two up the leader to drag it down just a foot or two.<br /><br /></p> <p>Another favorite method for catching crappies and bluegills on Reelfoot is dapping along the base of cypress and tupelo trees with a cane pole and jig. Simply lower the offering next to the trunk and hold it there. Your hand will tremble enough to give it action like a fish was rotating its pectoral fins. If no strike comes, slowly swim it to the other side of the tree trunk.<br /><br /></p> <p>Many resorts and docks offer lodging, bait, tackle and boats for rent as well as guide service.
