As the hustle & bustle of the holidays starts to quiet down, a new year begins peeking over the horizon. This is often the perfect time to reflect on past hunting seasons and fishing memories made. It’s also a great opportunity to create new goals, break bad habits, and plan a new adventure.

While most New Year’s Resolutions involve balancing the checkbook or strapping yourself to a treadmill, we decided to compile a few suggestions that might actually survive past February 1^st. Here’s a list of New Year’s Resolutions designed with Hunters and Anglers in mind:

1. Take a First-Timer Hunting or Fishing

Remember the excitement you felt when you shot your first deer or hooked into that first trophy bass? There are plenty of kids (and adults) around the country who have never had the chance to experience the great outdoors.

Whether it’s your own child or the neighbor down the street, resolve to take someone new afield with you. Passing on the tradition is one of the most important things we can do to preserve the things we love. Be careful, you just might find that seeing them have success is even more enjoyable than doing it on your own!

2. Organize Your Hunting & Fishing Gear

How many times have you missed an opportunity or declined a last-minute invite simply because your pile of gear was not ready for action? Spend time this offseason maintaining, organizing, and streamlining your hunting gear or fishing tackle. Even if it costs a little more up front, you’ll save money in the long run—and earn a lot more memories.

3. Try a New Wild Game Recipe

When it comes to gear and tactics, we will try every little thing to gain an edge—but when we get in the kitchen, many of us stick to the tried-and-true methods we’ve been using for years. Make a vow to branch out and try at least one new recipe when cooking your fish or wild game this season—you may find a new favorite. Bacon-Wrapped Duck Reuben Bite Recipe

Ingredients

3-4 wild duck breasts

2 cups water

1 TBSP pickling spices

4 tsp Kosher salt

2 TBSP sugar

1 tsp granulated garlic

1 tsp black pepper

1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes

12 strips thin-sliced bacon

1 cup sauerkraut

4 slices Swiss cheese

Steps to Prepare Bacon - Wrapped Duck Reuben Bites

1. Pour water into medium bow. Add pickling spices, Kosher salt, sugar, garlic, black pepper and crushed red pepper.

2. Trim fat and silverskin from duck breast. Cut meat into bite-sized portions. Place duck into Marinator and add brine.

3. Cut meat into bite-sized portions. Place duck into Marinator and add brin. Seal Marinator and refrigerate for 24 hours

4. Seal Marinator and refrigerate for 24 hour. Fill smoker's hopper with Cabela's BBQ Wood Pellets.

5. Preheat grill to 400. Bring water to a boil and add marinated duck

6. Boil one minute, reduce to medium heat. Poach for five minutes

7. Transfer to paper towel-lined plate. Cut Swiss cheese into thirds. Top each duck bite with sauerkraut

8. Wrap with 1/3 slice of cheese and bacon strip. Secure with toothpick and place on appetizer grid. Repeat until all duck is wrapped.

9. Place in grill, let cook for 20 minutes, remove from grill and enjoy!

4. Learn a New Skill

Whether you’re an old dog or a young pup, we can all learn new tricks. Devote yourself to picking up a new skill or method this next year. It could be something as simple as fishing a football jig, or an entirely new pursuit, like bowhunting. Even if you don’t have immediate success, the experience will make you a better hunter or angler.

5. Make a Habitat Improvement

If you love the outdoors, it’s your duty to protect the health and habitat of the wildlife you pursue. Don’t worry if you don’t have time to plant food plots or sink brush piles—simply spending a few minutes picking up trash can go a long way.

No matter your passion, there’s a conservation organization designed to support it. Strongly consider joining or donating to make an impact that may outlast your lifetime.

6. Practice One New Healthy Habit.

Don’t worry, we won’t mention a treadmill again, but let’s face it: the longer you live, the more you’ll get to hunt and fish. Plus, the mountains aren’t getting shorter and waves aren’t getting smaller anytime soon.

Promise yourself that you’ll develop at least one healthy habit this year. It could be as complex as an entire workout routine, or as simple as trading that Snickers for an apple on the way out of the house.

7. Plan a Trip to Another State

We only have so many years on this giant spinning rock, don’t spend all of yours in the same spot. Take the time to venture out of your comfort zone, even if it’s only for a few days. Most states offer relatively inexpensive temporary licenses or small game tags, so don’t let a low budget deter your trip. 8. Find a New Fishing or Hunting Spot Close to Home

In your new-found wanderlust, don’t forget to explore your own backyard. Many people drive right past the best hunting and fishing spots on their way to work, without even knowing they exist. 9. Encourage Other Hunters & Anglers

Hunters and anglers are naturally competitive, it’s part of the will that drives us to succeed. While a good-natured ribbing of your buddies certainly has its place, don’t forget to holster that competitive spirit when dealing with others.

The outside world is already too full of criticism, envy, and people getting offended. Anti-hunters and animal rights activists are licking their chops at the chance to divide and conquer the outdoor industry. As long as it’s ethical and law-abiding, take the time to support other hunters and anglers. You never know who’s listening.

10. Carry a Piece of History

From the latest broadheads to revolutionary baitcaster reels, we all love trying out new hunting and fishing gear. In our hurry to experience the new cutting-edge, we sometimes forget the traditions that got us to this point.

Craig Morgan is serving as the honorary chairman for National Hunting and Fishing Day.

On Sept. 27, 2014, experts estimate nearly four million Americans will participate in over 3,000 outdoor events on National Hunting and Fishing Day. This special day was set aside to provide people a chance to experience, understand and appreciate traditional outdoor sports. In addition, National Hunting and Fishing Day recognizes the contributions of sportsmen and women have on behalf of conservation.

While many are aware that several species of wildlife were on the brink of extinction in the early 1900s, the fact that hunters and anglers were the earliest and most vocal supporters of conservation and scientific wildlife management is virtually unknown. Hunters and anglers were the first to recognize that habitat loss and unregulated uses of wildlife were threatening the future of many species.

Led by fellow sportsman President Theodore Roosevelt, these early conservationists called for the first laws restricting the commercial slaughter of wildlife. They urged sustainable use of fish and game and created hunting and fishing licenses, which still serve as an important source of funds for conservation.

Another significant contribution to conservation came in 1937 when Congress passed the Pittman-Robertson Act, also known as the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act. This act, which was supported by hunters, conservation groups, state and federal government and the firearms industry, created excise taxes on firearms and ammunition (and later archery equipment) to help fund wildlife conservation efforts. In 1950, The Dingell-Johnson Sport Fish Restoration Act was passed and it authorized providing funding to the states for fisheries conservation. Since the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration program began, the program has collected more than $14 billion in excise taxes and awarded this to states for fish and wildlife conservation efforts.

The actions of these concerned sportsmen were the foundation of the North American wildlife conservation model, a science-based blueprint that fostered the most dramatic conservation successes of all time. After decades of unregulated exploitation, populations of white-tailed deer, elk, antelope, wild turkey, wood ducks and many other species began to recover.

During the next half-century, in addition to the funds they contributed for conservation and their diligent watch over the returning health of America’s outdoors, sportsmen worked countless hours to protect and improve millions of acres of vital habitat—lands and waters for the use and enjoyment of everyone.

National Hunting and Fishing Day remains the most effective grassroots effort ever undertaken to promote the outdoors and conservation thanks in large part to the awareness created by celebrity volunteers. National Hunting and Fishing Day honorary chairs have included George Bush, Tom Seaver, Hank Williams Jr., Arnold Palmer, Terry Bradshaw, Tony Stewart, George Brett and many other sports and entertainment figures.

This year, American country music star, award-winning TV host and former soldier Craig Morgan is serving as the honorary chairman for National Hunting and Fishing Day. Morgan is well known as an avid outdoorsman and also takes pride in serving others. He has made eleven overseas tours to entertain our troops and received the 2006 USO Merit Award for his tireless support of our U.S. soldiers and their families. The Tennessee native is also host of the award-winning “Craig Morgan All Access Outdoors,” on the Outdoor Channel.

Morgan was recently interviewed on Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World radio where he talked about his music and his life, including his role as the 2014 honorary chairman for National Hunting and Fishing Day. An avid fisherman and outdoorsman, President George W. Bush made a surprise appearance as keynote speaker Sept. 15, 2014, at the Tracker Marine Conference at Big Cedar Lodge on Table Rock Lake. The president’s father, George H. W. Bush, addressed the same convention 20 years ago in 1994, nearby Springfield, Missouri.

Invited by Bass Pro Shops and Tracker Marine Founder/CEO Johnny Morris, Mr. Bush delighted attendees from the United States and around the world including such faraway places as Australia, Russia, China and South Africa with stories about his and his family’s love for fishing and their passion for the outdoors. He also spoke about his administration’s work to protect water quality and natural resources. While in the White House, Mr. Bush restored, improved or protected more than 3 million acres of wetlands and created wildlife habitats through the North American Wetlands Conservation Act and other cooperative conservation efforts.

”We pioneered a new model of cooperative conservation in which government and private citizens and environmental advocates work together,” said Mr. Bush, a longtime family friend of Morris.

Morris praised the president for initiating many conservation efforts that helped protect wildlife habitats and water quality. One example is an Executive Order Mr. Bush signed to conserve as game fish two of America's most popular recreational fish – striped bass and red drum – for the recreational, economic, and environmental benefit.

“We are inspired by and grateful to Mr. Bush and his father for their shared love of the sport of fishing and for their leadership and commitment to national conservation efforts,” said Morris. “His efforts help ensure recreational fishing opportunities continue to exist for us and future generations. We are very proud that the president fishes out of his own Bass Tracker boat on his ranch in Texas.”

Bass Pro Shops/Tracker Marine Founder Johnny Morris and President George W. Bush shared a few laughs and fishing stories at the Tracker Marine Conference held at Big Cedar Lodge on Table Rock Lake.

During the conference, Morris presented Mr. Bush with Tracker Bass Force One, patterned after Air Force One. This special boat was made at the Tracker Plant in nearby Lebanon, Missouri. Tracker is the first boat, motor, and trailer package designed just for anglers and introduced by Morris in 1978. Tracker has remained America's #1 selling fishing boat for more than 36 years.

Morris and Bush shared fishing stories and laughs with other bass fishing legends Bill Dance, Roland Martin, Jimmy Houston, Kevin VanDam, Rick Clunn, Charlie Campbell and others. Give our readers a brief synopsis of this season's shows.

This is the season of elk; 60 percent of our episodes are elk episodes, both archery and rifle. People seem to love the way we do elk hunts and I suspect it has a lot to do with our hunting being very similar to how elk hunting occurs for the audience.

Our archery elk hunts result in some very close up encounters — one at 12 yards and the other at 28 yards. People will have to watch to see the outcome.

This season continues our self-guided hunting style, with heavy emphasis on the public lands we are hunting and how those became public lands. Important information I think hunters can benefit from.

We are also adding a 30-second segment that focuses on the greatest public land access program in history — The Land and Water Conservation Fund. This fund has provided millions of acres of public hunting access, yet it goes unnoticed by most of the hunting community. If not reauthorized by Congress next year, hunters will notice that, for sure.

What sets this season apart from others?

This is a season where things go in our favor. We work hard and we finally catch some breaks, as opposed to last year, when around every corner was some bad luck.

We purposefully did more elk hunts this year. I want to dispel the myth that you need to draw some once-in-a-lifetime glory tag and pay for exclusive access, just to go elk hunting. Opportunity exists for the traveling hunter to hunt elk ever year. I think this season shows that, given how many different places we travel to hunt elk in this season — Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico.

If you could only take one tool (besides your gun or bow) with you on a DIY hunt, what would that be?

A good attitude, and optimism that I will have fun. Yeah, my rifle and bow are primary. As far as an item of gear, that is a tough one. Probably my "never leave home without it item" is my GPS and map chip from OnXMaps that tells me land ownership information.

Now expand that, what is a must have checklist for any DIY hunter?

Not sure we have enough time for that in one space. It would depend upon a backpack hunt or a base camp hunt or a motel-based hunt. Would also depend heavily on the species in question.

If I had to give five things, in addition to the proper mindset, they would be this:

1. The best optics you can afford.
2. Good pack, along with knowledge of how to quarter and pack out an animal.
3. Good boots.
4. Clothing that allows you to be comfortable in all conditions and hunt hard while you are in the field.
5. A GPS that contains a map chip showing land ownership of the area you are hunting.

What are the biggest mistakes rookie DIY hunters make?

Focusing on tactics and not learning where to find the game.

We in TV and magazines are to blame for much of that. New hunters, especially new elk hunters, need to know as much as they can about their quarry. The more you know about them and their seasonal habits, the easier it will be to find them. You can't kill one if you can't find one.

Most game is taken with very similar tactics once you find the animals. The strategies and tactics from one type of hunting, say whitetails, is pretty applicable to other species, say elk.

But, the manners of finding animals on your first hunt for them is not nearly as applicable. Focus on how to find game and you will end up punching a lot of tags.

Thanks to a blue-winged teal population boom over the last several years, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources approved last month an "experimental" early teal hunting season to run Sept. 1-7 — the first of such in nearly 50 years.

According to a news release, the experimental early season is only approved for three years, with the Michigan DNR measuring "attempts and harvest of non-target species to make sure hunters are harvesting teal and not other species of ducks like wood ducks and mallards."

During those three years, if the number of attempts to shoot non-teal ducks is too high, the experiment will be "failed" and early teal season will not continue. "Because of this, hunters are strongly encouraged to study up on their duck identification skills for this season," the release stated.

To help waterfowl hunters, the Michigan DNR is offering a Teal and Early Goose Hunting Workshop in Grand Rapids on Aug. 29. A "potential teal hunting opportunity map" is also available online.

If you were writing a novel, you’d be hard pressed to create a more Renaissancey type character than the very real Sgt. Theresa Vail. A member of the SHE Outdoor pro staff and host of a new outdoor TV show, Vail possesses skill sets that seem almost superhero like:

Mechanic for the Kansas Army National Guard
Dental technician
Expert marksman with the M16 A2 rifle
Speaks Chinese
Avid bowhunter

She is also the former Miss Kansas and wowed the world in the 2014 Miss America pageant with her Serenity Prayer tattoo and desire to showcase her archery skills in the talent portion of the competition (though pageant officials frowned on that).

How does one woman accomplish all that by age 23?

Vail credits a couple of different things. First, her faith and the power of prayer have been the dominant guideposts in her life. Another life-shaping force is her service to our country in the Army National Guard while her family is a source of inspiration for her, too. With nine brothers and sisters, Vail said it could have been easy to get lost in the crowd. However, her dad, recently retired Col. Mark Vail, took 10-year-old Theresa hunting when he was stationed in Germany. That bonding time ignited her passion for hunting and helped her overcome being bullied in school. She’s has run wide open ever since.

Now that her reign as Miss Kansas is officially over, Vail looks forward to applying her mad skills and energy to the outdoor industry. Vail’s Miss America platform, "Empowering Women: Overcoming Stereotypes and Breaking Barriers,” is a message she wants to carry forward as a member of the SHE Outdoor pro team.

“While I consider myself a tomboy, I think you can have the best of both worlds: dress up, do your hair, and be feminine but then go to the woods and not shower for a week. Women are ready to let go of the stereotypes that hold them back from enjoying themselves.”

With the proliferation of pink hunting gear and apparel in recent years, there’s been a ton of talk within the women’s hunting community about stereotypes. While Vail is not a fan of pink hunting gear herself, she does acknowledge that it has its place.

“I don’t want to make an issue of pink because if it gets a women involved in the outdoors that otherwise wouldn’t feel welcome, that’s great. The important thing is that we have options and can do what we want to do. As women hunters, we should support each other’s choices rather than judge them.”

Vail’s next adventure has her trading in her fashion-forward Miss Kansas wardrobe for SHE Outdoor hunting apparel to host a new Outdoor Channel reality show. The show, aptly named “Limitless with Theresa Vail,” will debut in July 2015 and will feature her tackling new challenges such as hunting elk and bear. Vail said while viewers will see her struggle, what they won’t see her do is give up. As if. With the moxie Vail shows, it makes you wonder what she’ll do in the next 23 years!

Big Cedar Lodge Legends of Golf Pro-Am Pairings and Outdoor Activities for Wednesday, June 4 & Thursday, June 5.

There are 52 teams, with 4 amateurs and 1 professional golfer paired to complete in the Pro-Am on Wednesday and Thursday. The Champions Tour will determine the 26 teams each day at both Top of the Rock and Buffalo Ridge.

Teams of 26 will be divided in half both days playing 13 teams in the morning and 13 teams in the afternoon at Top of the Rock. Teams not playing golf will participate in an Outdoor Pro-Am activity such as shooting sports (sporting clays or archery) or fishing (bass or trout). The remaining 26 teams will play 18 holes throughout the day at Buffalo Ridge with straight tee times each day.

Teams are confirmed, the final field is now set for the Big Cedar Lodge Legends of Golf presented by Bass Pro Shops, which takes place June 4-8 at Top of the Rock, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Design Par-3 golf course, and Buffalo Ridge (formerly Branson Creek), Missouri’s No. 1 public course, designed by Tom Fazio.

One of the longest-running events on the Champions Tour schedule, the newly-named Big Cedar Lodge Legends of Golf presented by Bass Pro Shops is a two-man team competition conducted over 54 holes using four-ball and alternate-shot formats. This year marks the first time that a PGA TOUR-sanctioned event will be played on a Par-3 course. Following Friday and Saturday rounds at Buffalo Ridge and Top of the Rock (June 6-7), all contestants will play at the nine-hole Top of the Rock in the final round.

This year’s field includes eight World Golf Hall of Fame Members across 42 teams in two divisions - the Champions Division, consisting of 31 teams, and the Legends Division (11 teams) for players ages 65 and older. Thirty-four players in both divisions have won a cumulative 91 PGA TOUR major championships. The field includes multiple Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup captains from the U.S., European and International teams.

The Champions Division includes the 2009 Legends of Golf champions Bernhard Langer/Tom Lehman. Langer is the current leader in the Charles Schwab Cup points standings and the current leading money winner. Other notable teams in the Champions Division include U.S Open champions Tom Watson/Andy North, Masters winners Sandy Lyle/Ian Woosnam, the major championship winning team of Nick Price/Mark O’Meara and 2013 Charles Schwab Cup winner Kenny Perry, paired with fellow Kentucky native Russ Cochran. Defending champion Jeff Sluman, who won the title with Brad Faxon in Savannah last year, will team with Fred Funk this year as Faxon is unavailable due to a prior commitment.

One of the most prominent teams in the Legends Division will be the dynamic pairing of World Golf Hall of Fame legends Jack Nicklaus/Gary Player, who return after teaming in last year’s tournament.

“The Legends of Golf is one of my favorite events to play in each year,” stated Player. “As a two-time winner, I am thrilled to once again tee up with my friend, Jack Nicklaus, at Big Cedar Lodge’s Top of the Rock in what should be a fantastic tournament.”

Lee Trevino/Mike Hill, four-time winners of the Champions Division during the 1990’s, will also compete in the Legends Division.

World Golf Hall of Fame inductee Fred Couples withdrew after the deadline with a lingering back injury. Couples intended to team with Jay Haas, who has finished in the top five in eight of nine starts this season. Haas will now team with fan favorite Peter Jacobsen.

New faces to the tournament this year include Billy Andrade, Tommy Armour III and Steve Lowery. Andrade, a four-time winner on the PGA TOUR, joined the Champions Tour earlier this year and will team with Armour, a two-time champion on the PGA TOUR. Steve Lowery, a winner of three PGA TOUR titles, will pair with Mark Calcavecchia in the Champions Division.

The tournament kicks off with Mercury Marine pro-am events on Wednesday and Thursday (June 4-5). The two unique pro-am days will feature golf, followed by a multiple sporting event in the afternoon which includes shooting, archery and fishing. Legendary athletes in these additional sports will compete alongside of the players.

The Big Cedar Lodge Legends of Golf presented by Bass Pro Shops will offer something for everyone. Children 17 years of age and younger will be admitted into the grounds at Buffalo Ridge for free with an accompanying ticketed adult. Youth tickets can be picked up onsite at the Admission Gate at the Main Spectator Entrance, on the day of admission.

Fans will also have the opportunity to see sports legends like the all-time great bass fisherman Bill Dance, NASCAR driver Tony Stewart, many more.

To honor the men and women who serve in the armed forces, our American heroes, Bass Pro Shops and Big Cedar Lodge are pleased to offer Retired Veterans, Active Duty, Active Reserve, National Guard, DOD Civilians and their accompanying spouses free daily tickets to Buffalo Ridge golf course events. Tickets may be claimed at the main admission gate tournament week with a valid military ID.
