I've noticed that there are a lot of viewers on this forum but nobody responds.

I'm I the only trapper on the Bass Pro forums?

I get lonely talking to myself all the time. Respond! If you don't know anything about trapping I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have. Just the fact that you would click on and view this shows that you have some interest.

Just talk to me!

Welcome, Larry!

I just responded to your post about getting started.

Where you from? What type of game do you have around you?

I'm in Western, KY near Henderson. I've not had the land long so I'm not real sure what all runs it. I know we've got fox and coyote but that's all I know for sure, other than deer and squirrels. I do have a creek that runs through it and it fields that rotate corn and soy beans on 2 sides.

I'm betting that the woods around you have plenty of coon. There should be some fishers around there, too, if I'm not mistaken. Stripe Skunk is supposed to be a sought after pelt and it wouldn't surprise me to find them there.

Okay... Let's start with coon.

I like to trap creek banks for coon. They like hanging around the water where they can hunt for craw dads and muscles. Check into some Duke, dog proof raccoon traps. They are the coolest tools I've added to my trapline. They are designed with a pull type trigger instead of a push trigger. This makes them coon specific.(still, you will catch possum in them) I also use a lot of Duke 1 1/2's for coon.

I bait a lot with sardines in the back of these traps with a half of a marshmallow impelled on the trigger so that the coon has to pull the trigger to get the bait. Sardine or other fish type bait works well along creek banks where the coon is already hunting for sea food.

On dry land coon sets, I may use a mixture of baits. Some still with fishy baits while others with sweet baits. If I'm trapping coon in an area around house pets I switch to sweet baits and entice him to the trap with a trail of mini marshmallows and/or a string of molasses.

Most of my equipment I order from catalogs. One good source is Fur Harvester Trading Post. You can find them on line at www.fntpost.com. Next is Cumberland's Northwest Trappers Supply on line at www.nwtrappers.com.

I'm also a certified Wildlife Damage Control agent and get a lot of my equipment for that through WCS, Wildlife Control Supplies. They are on line at www.ShopWCS.com.

That's all I've got time for today. I gotta get outta here and work a little. We've got some practice to do yet before we take on fox, but I'll take that up for you in the near future.

I'll be back in touch!
