December Bass, Falling Temperatures, Look for Shad

In parts of the country where lakes don’t ice over, you can still catch bass in December.

Shad should be dying because of the falling water temperatures and that’s something the bass key on, so start by looking for schools of shad. When you find them, start with a quarter ounce spoon on 16 to 18 pound line.

Fish the lure like a dying shad, with a snapping, fluttering motion. Also try jigging spoons on any creek channel bends, especially those between 12 and 30 feet deep.

Riprap around a causeway is usually another productive area. Use a quarter ounce Rat-L-Trap® in chrome with blue, or a 3/8 ounce spinnerbait with small gold or silver blades.

If you live where you can still fish for bass in December, count your blessings. You can deer hunt in the morning and bass fish in the afternoon.
