Smart phoneWhile one of the supreme benefits of camping is getting away from it all -- with electronics like TV, mobile devices and alarms clocks included -- there’s something to be said about the convenience and utility of having a library of camping knowledge that fits perfectly in your pocket.

With mobile apps for your smartphone, this is a possibility.

Consider downloading these great apps to add to your camping convenience.

(And for those who are phone-averse on camping trips, you can always consider your smartphone a sort of “Swiss Army Knife” for knowledge -- everything you need is compressed and conveniently located in one small device.)

1.) “SAS Survival Guide” by Trellisys.net (iPhone & Android)
Now, an encyclopedia’s worth of survival knowledge can fit in the palm of your hand. Included in this app: the bestselling book by John ''Lofty'' Wiseman, survival tip videos, a survival checklist, a comprehensive First Aid section and photo galleries of animal tracks, edible and poisonous plants, snakes and more.

2.) “Camp and RV - Tent Camping to RV Parks” by Allstays LLC (iPhone)
This app gives you access to important campground details -- from contact information to directions to reviews to available amenities and more -- for more than 24,950 campgrounds in the United States and Canada. In addition, users can easily look up overnight parking options such as Walmarts or casinos, as well as the locations of trucks stops with amenities and stores such as Bass Pro Shops and Costco.

The best part? Users have access to most all the information provided by the app, even when they have no service.

3.) “BackCountry Navigator PRO GPS” by CritterMap Software LLC (Android)
Going off the grid? This app provides you with detailed topographic maps beyond cellphone coverage -- just download the maps you’ll need in advance.

4.) “Camping List Pro+” by Goran Bajazetov, Free (iPhone)
Feel like you’re always forgetting something? This is the app for you! Camping List Pro+ gives you the ability to create and save checklists for your journeys, as well as add notes and reminders to your lists. An added bonus? You can email your checklist to your fellow campers!

5.) “Flashlight Ⓞ” by iHandy Inc., Free (iPhone)
The name of the app says it all: This is a flashlight for your phone. While, hopefully, you’ve packed along ample light sources for your camping trip, it never hurts to be extra prepared.

What camping apps do you use?

Happy camping!
